IBM is leading the race for artificial intelligence, according to a new study for Digital Science

The patent study conducted by Digital Science found that IBM is leading in general artificial intelligence developments, with the most patent applications, along with Google and Microsoft
IBM currently has the most patent applications in generative artificial intelligence, ahead of fellow tech giants Google and Microsoft.

According to a new study by digital science, companies are leading the AI race, as well as other leading companies such as Samsung, Adobe, Baidu and Intel in the top 10. Each company is competing for first place in line with a 16% increase in patent grants over the past five years, as well as a 31% increase in applications.

The global rise of artificial intelligence has a lot to answer for, highlighting that companies are eager to continue developing the technology in the hope of transforming enterprise operations.

Transforming the artificial intelligence landscape
As the digital transformation landscape continues to evolve, companies are looking for new and improved ways to develop their technological capabilities and understandings in order to keep up.

According to Digital Science, patent applications are strong indicators of where companies see future innovation and technological value. Companies that are developing artificial intelligence innovations often seek to obtain a patent to protect the ownership of their products.

Although AI adoption rates are still low, the high number of patent applications highlights a larger number of upcoming innovations.

The report notes that AI patents make up almost 22% of the total number of AI patents – a figure that only continues to grow, with more than half a million patents in this area in the last five years. IBM is the leading enterprise in this field, with more than 1,500 patent applications in 2023. This is more than double the number that Microsoft has.

As a global leader in enterprise artificial intelligence, IBM is able to provide critical support to a range of key industries. The company’s strategy is to constantly focus on a limited number of areas such as artificial intelligence, while the company pursues how artificial intelligence innovation will affect.

How IBM continues to advance in artificial intelligence
After conducting their own research, IBM found that 82% of business leaders have already deployed general artificial intelligence or intend to deploy it within the next year. 96% also prioritize governance and ethics while participating in shaping internal and industrial frameworks, as data security is seen as a key challenge for organizations moving forward.

IBM is also working to promote safe and responsible AI, having formed an AI alliance with meta at the end of 2023 to facilitate open source innovations. The two companies hope to bring together leading developers, scientists, universities and companies to address real AI safety concerns around the world. It will also provide a platform to share and find solutions that suit the needs of researchers, developers and adopters around the world.

The company is also committed to improving workers ‘ AI skill sets, having pledged to train two million AI learners by the end of 2026, as part of a broader collaboration with global universities to offer AI training to adult learners.
