German legend Franz Beckenbauer has passed away at the age of 78

The German Football Association announced on Monday the death of German legend “Kaiser” Franz Beckenbauer at the age of 78.

Over the past years, Beckenbauer has suffered from health problems that pushed him away from public life and the world of football, especially after accusations were made against him of buying votes in the Supreme Committee of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to recommend for his country to win the right to host the 2006 World Cup.

Beckenbauer is considered one of the legends of the game of football, as he won the World Cup title with West Germany in 1974 as a player and in 1990 as a coach. He also led Bayern Munich to win the European Cup (currently the Champions League) 3 times in a row, and the local league 4 times.
